The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) today announced the slate of candidates for its Board of Trustees, President-elect and Honorary President. The elections for these positions will be held March 12–May 3, 2021.

The two candidates for President-elect for 2022–2023 are Valerie Prince of Odenville, AL, and Wendy Weber of Bellevue, NE. The two pairs nominated for election to serve 2022–2025 terms on the APhA Board of Trustees are: Vibhuti Arya of Brooklyn, NY, vs. Sean Jeffery of Branford, CT; and Stephen Carroll of Benton, AR, vs. Scott Tomerlin of Rockledge, FL. Mary L. Euler of Union Town, PA, is unopposed as the candidate for Honorary President.

Ballots for APhA’s upcoming Board of Trustees elections will be emailed to members on the afternoon of Friday, March 12, 2021, along with ballots for candidates for the executive committees and sections of the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice & Management (APhA–APPM) and the APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research & Science (APhA–APRS) and for the APhA–APPM Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Further election and candidate information will be available online at the APhA Election webpage no later than mid-January. 

Candidates for President-elect

Valerie Prince, PharmD, FAPhA, BCPS, is a clinical pharmacy specialist at Christ Health Center Family Medicine Residency Program. She completed an American Society of Health-System Pharmacy (ASHP)-accredited residency at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis. A graduate of Mercer University, she has enjoyed practicing in acute care, ambulatory, independent, chain and long-term care pharmacies. Her primary areas of interest are pain management, substance use disorders, mentoring and interprofessional practice and education. Her current practice setting has allowed her to mentor resident physicians as well as student/resident pharmacists, while sharing her passion for addressing the issue of substance abuse in a larger scope. Her national-level involvement in APhA includes two terms on the Board of Trustees, APhA–APPM President, Speaker of the House of Delegates, and APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA–ASP) national officer. She is the immediate former Chair of the House Rules Review Committee. Her extensive involvement in the Alabama Pharmacy Association (APA) includes APA Research and Education Foundation (APAREF) President and APA Board of Trustees. She is a past national president of Phi Lambda Sigma leadership society and was recognized as National Chapter Advisor of the Year while at Samford University. She served the Alabama Board of Pharmacy for several years on the Committee on Rehabilitating Impaired Pharmacists. She is the recipient of the Linwood F. Tice Friend of APhA–ASP Award, the APhA–APPM Distinguished Achievement in Clinical Practice Award and APA Distinguished Service Award. She is an APhA Fellow. She has a long record of community service and mentoring, including 14 years as a Girl Scout leader. Her current community involvement includes serving on the Governor’s Task Force on Opioids.

Wendy Weber, PharmD, MBA, FAPhA, BCPS, is a proud graduate of North Dakota State University. She obtained her MBA from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. As a pharmacist for over 20 years, she has spent the majority of her career in clinical and administrative positions within academic medical centers. She has also practiced in community pharmacy, home infusion and administrative consulting. Dr. Weber is currently a Senior Associate at Rainmakers Strategic Solutions, a government and commercial contractor, serving as the Lead Pharmacist for the Medicare Part D formulary review contract. Dr. Weber is a lifelong APhA member who is currently serving as a Trustee on the APhA Board of Trustees. Her past leadership experiences with APhA includes APhA–APPM President and Trustee, APhA Foundation Director, and APhA–ASP National Member-at-large. Dr. Weber has also served as a delegate to the APhA House of Delegates for 20 years and in many other appointed and elected leadership positions within APhA–APPM.

Candidates for Trustee (Pair One)

Vibhuti Arya, PharmD, MPH, has worked for the past 15 years to bridge the gap between public health pharmacy, and diversity and equity. Dr. Arya serves as a tenured Clinical Professor at St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and serves as Clinical Advisor to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; she is also a Global Lead for Gender Equity and Diversity Workforce Development for the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). In her public health practice, she works to integrate pharmacists into public health initiatives, particularly among high-risk, medically underserved areas in New York City, and advises on legislation pertinent to pharmacy practice and access to care. To date, Dr. Arya has been engaged with several efforts, including public health detailing, policy planning, expanding naloxone access through community pharmacies, syndromic surveillance, correctional health services, health information technology and emergency preparedness. Dr. Arya engages her students and colleagues to examine public health programs and policies through the lens of equity, applying social justice principles and frameworks to help reduce inequities in care. She completed the Pharmaceutical Care Leadership Residency at the University of Minnesota and her MPH at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She brings together her experience in public health, pharmacy and social justice to serve the members of APhA.

Sean Jeffery, PharmD, BCGP, FASCP, AGSF, is Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services at Integrated Care Partners, an accountable care organization responsible for Hartford HealthCare’s value-based practice transformation. Dr. Jeffery is a tireless advocate for recognition of pharmacists as health care providers. Throughout his career, he has focused on implementing innovative pharmacist care services for seniors. Currently, he is responsible for pharmacy network development and strategy, population health management, and support of an integrated care management team. He is also a Clinical Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. He was previously a consultant pharmacist at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, where he served as a postgraduate year (PGY)2 Geriatrics Residency Program Director. Dr. Jeffery earned his bachelor of science from the University of Connecticut and his PharmD from The Ohio State University and completed a specialty residency in geriatrics at the Durham VA and Duke Center for Aging. He is completing his first term as an APhA Trustee, during which he was appointed to the APhA Finance Committee. He has also served on the APhA Policy Committee. Outside of APhA, Dr. Jeffery served as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists from 2012–2014 and Chair of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s Geriatrics SIG in 2007–2008. He also chaired the Polypharmacy Special Interest Group for the American Geriatrics Society (AGS). He was recognized as a Fellow of the AGS and an Ohio State University Distinguished Alumni and received the Elan Biopharmaceuticals Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award.

Candidates for Trustee (Pair Two)

Stephen Carroll, PharmD, MBA, received his PharmD in 2005 from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy. He also completed his MBA at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Arkansas State University. He currently practices and is a co-owner in AllCare Specialty Pharmacy in Little Rock. Dr. Carroll served on the Arkansas Pharmacists Association (APA) Board of Directors from 2010–2020 and served as President of the APA Board of Directors in 2018–2019. Dr. Carroll was appointed to the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission and served as a commissioner on it from 2016 to 2019. Dr. Carroll has led several grassroots efforts to further the profession of pharmacy in his home state to protect pharmacists from the overreaching practices of PBMs. He has also participated in the state legislative process to expand the scope of practice for pharmacists in Arkansas. Dr. Carroll is also an active member of APhA and the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy.

Scott Tomerlin, PharmD, CPh, is a Florida-licensed pharmacist. He is the Pharmacy Manager for Walgreens Pharmacy in Rockledge, FL. Born and raised in Louisville, KY, Scott is a 2006 graduate of the Mercer University College of Pharmacy in Atlanta. It is there that he met his future wife, Teresa, during their first semester of pharmacy school. Teresa is a pharmacist for CVS Pharmacy inside Target. He and his wife have three children: John, Nathan and Isabella. Scott is a 2006 graduate of Mercer University College of Pharmacy. Scott has had training in the independent and chain community, hospital, ambulatory and nuclear settings. He also had the opportunity to complete a 5-week international rotation in Hiroshima, Japan, at the University of Hiroshima during his fourth year of rotations. Scott has served in numerous leadership roles within the profession of pharmacy, including President of the Florida Pharmacy Association, President of the Brevard County Pharmacy Association and, most recently, on the APhA Political Action Committee Board of Governors. Scott is the recipient of the Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year Award by the Florida Pharmacy Association in 2007 and the Mercer University College of Pharmacy Young Alumni of the Year award in 2016. He most recently served on the Mercer University College of Pharmacy Alumni Association Board. Scott is an Eagle Scout and proudly gives back to the community through his involvement in the American Cancer Society, as well as serving as the Treasurer of his son’s Boy Scout troop.

Candidate for Honorary President

Mary L. Euler, PharmD, FAPhA, serves as Professor and Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy. Prior to arriving in Morgantown, WV, she served for 4 years as McGee Chair for Doctoral Studies and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy and 21 years as a faculty member and administrator at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Pharmacy. Her academic career includes experience in curricular design, faculty development, distance education, experiential learning, leadership development and academic service learning. Her teaching interests include professional communications, pharmacy history, patient education, health care ethics, leadership development, self-awareness training and vaccine-preventable illnesses. She is an APhA certified immunizing pharmacist and trainer. Dr. Euler is also the Associate Executive Director for Phi Lambda Sigma, the pharmacy leadership society, after having served as the Executive Director from 1999–2020. She is also the recipient of many professional and community service awards, including the APhA–ASP Outstanding Advisor Award, the APhA Gloria Niemeyer Francke Leadership Mentor Award, the Missouri Pharmacist Making a Difference Award, and the University of Missouri–Kansas City’s Mathew Wilson Award. In 2011, she was inducted as an APhA Fellow. Engaged in her community, Dr. Euler co-chaired the H1N1 education committee for the Kanawha County Health Department and served on the health department’s Multi-Agency Emergency Response Task Force. She is a certified trainer–facilitator for GIANT Worldwide leadership development programs.
