EP 18: How West Virginia Led the Nation in COVID Vaccinations
When the first COVID vaccines were released in December 2020, many states signed onto the federal government’s plan to vaccinate residents of long-term care facilities, using two national pharmacy chains. West Virginia was different. Our guests are two pharmacists who developed and then executed the plan that made West Virginia a national leader in vaccination rates for long-term residents against COVID-19. They are Krista Capehart, an APhA Fellow who is director of professional regulatory affairs for the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy and an associate professor of pharmacy at the University of West Virginia; and Gretchen Garofoli, a pharmacist in Morgantown, West Virginia, who is also the leader of APhA’s Special Interest Group, Immunizing Pharmacists.

EP 17: Track and Trace Law: Pharmacists’ New Responsibilities
In 2013, Congress passed the Drug Supply Chain Security Act, which many people call the track and trace law. In late November, new requirements went into effect, changing what pharmacists must do with their medications.

EP 16: The Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine: What Pharmacists Need to Know
On December 18, 2020, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the emergency use of the Moderna vaccine, exactly one week after granting the same to the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech. Two days later, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has issued its recommendations for the next two phases of vaccine allocation.

EP 15: The Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Pharmacy
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled 8-0 that an Arkansas law regulating how PBMs and pharmacies interact could be enforced, and was not preempted by federal law.
With more than three dozen other states debating or passing such legislation, the ruling could have nationwide impact. The CEOs of national pharmacy organization were unanimous in hailing the decision.

EP 13: Wes Hickman’s Story: From Chain “Chaos” to Independent Satisfaction
In January 2020, a front page article in the New York Times by Ellen Gabler hit the pharmacy profession like a thunderbolt: How Chaos at Chain Pharmacies is Putting Patients at Risk. For many pharmacists, every word of it rang true - and propelled Wes Hickman from obscurity to pharmacy celebrity.
Dr. Hickman’s posts on the social media platform Reddit, announcing his decision to go out on his own, caught the attention of the NY Times. His experiences gave voice to the frustrations and fears of many like him.
He is now the sole proprietor of an independent pharmacy bearing his name in Leland, N.C., just outside of Wilmington. We spoke with him recently on a weekday morning, as he was preparing to open his pharmacy and serve the people of the town where he was raised and still lives with his young family.

EP10: Pharmacy Goes to the U.S. Supreme Court
For the first time ever, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing a case that may determine the future of pharmacy for years to come. In Rutledge v. PCMA, which originated in Arkansas, the Court has been asked to decide if states can regulate the controversial business practices of pharmacy benefit managers. Oral arguments will be heard Oct. 6 in this potentially landmark case. The American Pharmacists Association joined several other pharmacy organizations in filing an amicus brief, submitting arguments to support the state of Arkansas.
