Pharmacogenomics

The Wall Street Journal Health Blog today published the blog post, “Genomics Won’t Lead to Big Health-Care Improvements ‘For Many Years.’” The blog post essentially said it will be a while before we realize the full benefits of our knowledge of the human genome. We are making significant progress, however, so like Adam Fein, I had to suggest that pharmacists can help with the following comment:

Pharmacists are increasingly getting training on pharmacogenomics in and out of pharmacy schools. We’re learning more about patients’ predisposition to disease and response to drug therapies that may be affected by genetic make up. Much as we’ve done with drug interactions beginning in the early 1970s, pharmacists can help physicians and patients manage the complex information and probabilities that will have to be weighed in making therapeutic decisions affected by genetic factors.
