Honoring Judy Shinogle

As I noted in an earlier blog post, Judy Shinogle, with whom I had the privilege to work more than 20 years ago at APhA, died in a car accident on May 20. Judy’s obituary has been published, and her funeral Mass was held on June 4 in Wichita, KS.

Our tight-knit pharmacy community is reeling from this tragic loss. Judy was just such a bright light! I never remember talking with her that she wasn’t smiling, unless it was when we were struggling over solutions to this issue or that. She was so incredibly passionate about our profession.

Judy touched many of us in the pharmacy community. For that reason, a number of Judy’s pharmacy colleagues—friends; fellow alumni of the APhA Foundation, National Council of State Pharmacy Association Executives (now the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, or NASPA); and current and former APhA Executive Residents—have decided to honor her through the ongoing Women in Pharmacy campaign. Part of the campaign involves establishing the Women in Pharmacy Exhibit and Conference Room at APhA headquarters. In memoriam, Judy’s name will appear prominently in the room.

If you would like to be among those to honor Judy through the Women in Pharmacy initiative, you can visit http://bit.ly/HonorWomeninPharmacy; please include “Judy Shinogle memorial” when writing in the “Comment or Special Instructions” box. Or contributions can be mailed to:

Alternatively, Judy’s family has also identified two nonprofits for tributes in her honor. One is the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation.

The other is the Judith A. Shinogle Memorial Fund at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Donations can be mailed to:

Thanks to April Shaughnessy, who will be dedicating a paver in honor of Judy, for continuing to keep us all informed of the family’s arrangements during this difficult time. Thanks also to Marsha Millonig for moving a pharmacy-related tribute forward.
