APhA: All in the family

I refer to the people who work at APhA as the “APhA family.” Although we work together as a team to advance the practice of pharmacy, we also support each other on a daily basis, which in turn, supports you, our members.

APhA participated in the national 2016 Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Our creative APhA staff lined up an educational and interactive day, which included a lip balm–making workshop where the children had to follow a recipe to “compound” a lip balm made from plants and oil. Pharmacists demonstrated a successful pharmacist–patient counseling session and let the kids use a stethoscope on each other. The children worked together to build a car from Legos and watched a presentation about how pharmacists work—from receiving a prescription to compounding medications to counseling patients about how medications work. More than a dozen children participated in this year’s event, ranging in age from 8 years to 13 years.

In May, at our annual staff recognition luncheon, we celebrated a record 20 milestone anniversaries for APhA staff and recognized their hard work and loyalty. One APhA staffer marked 25 years of service with APhA; four staffers marked 20 years of service; six staffers marked 15 years of service; four staffers marked 10 years of service; and five staffers marked 5 years of service.

In May we celebrated one more anniversary—the 7-year anniversary of APhA’s move from temporary quarters back to our beautiful home on the National Mall. Not a day goes by when we aren’t appreciative of this new headquarters building and the bright future we have here as we work together to promote pharmacy and pharmacists!
