On October 16, APhA hosted St. John’s University 34th Annual Insider’s View of the Capital Program. Laura Cranston, BSPharm, of the Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) led an eventful day of programs centered on the careers and opportunities that await new pharmacy graduates.

The first discussion, “Career Opportunities for Pharmacists in Washington, DC,” was led by Alex Adams, PharmD, Vice President of Pharmacy Programs, National Association of Chain Drug Stores, and Samuel Stolpe, PharmD, Director of Strategic Quality Initiatives, PQA. The second discussion focused on “Opportunities for Pharmacy Students & New Graduates in Washington, DC.” The panelists—Maria Scarlatos, PharmD, Executive Fellow, PQA; Brian Wall, PharmD, Executive Resident, APhA Foundation; and Bri Morris, PharmD, Associate Director of Strategic Initiatives, National Community Pharmacists Association—targeted information on rotations, fellowships, and executive residencies.

After the two panel discussions, I had an opportunity to discuss the bright futures that awaited the students and how they could maintain a lifelong relationship with APhA. I also had a chance to meet and talk “dean stuff” with Russ DiGate, PhD, Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences of St. John’s University. Laura Cranston reported back to us that “the St. John’s students were truly inspired and motivated. They had their eyes opened to new information, new opportunities, and the importance of grassroots advocacy!” I’d like to give a big thank you to Laura for organizing such a successful day for the students.
